Jack White Portrait

Just finished this portrait of Jack White.

I put the decorative type in as kind of a trial. Might try and work it into a Band poster and hand draw the type. Try to emulate some floral embroidery on the jacket.

Kinda like it though.

Couple Mockups

Here are a couple of mockups for some design work I did earlier in the year.
The first, a poster for an exhibit on the International Typographic Style (swiss style)
The second, a transit ad for the Cap U Theatre Company, Exit 22

Spoon Monster

Forgot about this illustration I did a while back for fun, or it might have been an assignment, can't remember. Anyways, Britt Daniels, Jim James, and M Ward

Red in The Back

One of the basics of color theory is that cool-colors recede, while warm ones move towards the foreground. Sometimes I like to switch it up and use a really warm color in the background. The result can be really interesting, especially when it's only linework.

I'm still here...

I've been neglecting my blog lately. Not by choice. School is wrapping up and this last week involves completing some major projects that I've been working on (all design).

I'll be back to making regular posts in no time.

here's a few older ones from a moleskin, and a first hand look at what two years of design school does to you.

Cy, Rogue arm

My nephew being held by my mother at his 1st birthday party. I abandoned ship on this one, probably because it was late at night.

Young Proust

Found a really old reference of the infamous writer, Proust, as a young boy.

I decided to do the drawing on old book paper, (torn out of an old Tao teaching book) to give the illustration more authenticity.

He's wearing a great big scarf in the photo, which I added some digital color to.

Nude

I'm really digging the tension in this drawing, did it last night in my moleskin, darkened the background and added some ink wash.

Georgia Straight Cover

This was an assignment from earlier on in the term. The brief asked to illustrate a cover based on once of two articles; the first being in support of the Olympics and the second being against.

At the time, (the assignment took place pre Van 2010) I was compelled to illustrate the negative side to the Olympics. It just seemed to have more interesting visuals, plus we had just finished a similar assignment illustrating Olympic events and I was getting tired of drawing athletes.

The concept was to show a Vancouverite in a medieval stalk with holes lining up with the Olympic rings. Initially I had the figure contorted in such a way that his ankles also were in the stalk, but the body looked extremely– weird.

I thought the execution was OK, but this was early in the year and I hadn't much experience in Illustrator, so I guess I'll go easy on myself.

Chels and Cy

Sketch done with photo reference from my nephew's 1st Birthday celebration.

Happy Birthday Cy Guy!

THE HOBBIT!

Ok, so my previous illustration for the Hobbit was weak. Once it was finished I knew I'd be redoing it. I just needed a nudge. As a drawing, the foot was solid, but it was too anatomical looking and visually it was boring. I restarted this morning and created an illustration that I believe compliments the Cinderella piece and is quite nice visually.

Sometimes Doodles Say a Lot

I'm not sure I'll use the word doodle again.
A quick caricature of the lead singer of Dinosaur Jr, J. Mascis, a band my older brother introduced to me many years ago. I'm still a big fan.

This is So Fun

Here's another piece taken out of my moleskin and colored digitally in illustrator. I think I used a reference of a BSC group member, but I can't remember. Not Kevin Drew, or Jason Collett. Can't remember.
I'm still unsure whether I prefer the original to the digital whenever I color something out of my sketchbook. I think it's kind of like buying an album from iTunes vs. a record shop. Tangible vs. intangible. Either way, I'm having a blast doing it.

again this is out of my moleskin, taken into illustrator for some digital love

Sufjan Stevens

I had fun with this portrait of Sufjan Stevens. It was taken from the sketchbook into illustrator for some coloring. I may have gotten a little bit carried away with the transparencies, but I'm fairly happy with the end result.

Elliot Smith / Cy

Such a sad story. I'm definitely guilty of liking the hell out of his music. Every so often nothing beats a self indulgent pitty party, some elliott smith, and a coffee on a rainy day. And in juxtaposition, the coolest nephew ever! Cy Guy
